Sunset Valley is an urban area located in Travis County, Texas, within the United States. During the 2010 census, the population of this region was recorded at 749 individuals. This particular city is an enclosed community, completely bordered by the larger city of Austin.
Sunset Valley can be found at the coordinates 30°13′32″N 97°48′58″W (30.225631, –97.816133),which is situated about 5 miles in the southwestern direction from downtown Austin.
The city’s entire land area measures 1.4 square miles as reported by the United States Census Bureau.
In the year 1977, the initial city hall of Sunset Valley was finished, and two years later, in 1979, a police department was established. As time passed, the population grew to a count of 327 by 1990. In the early 1990s, a wastewater system was built thanks to a grant received from the Texas Water Development Board. Later in 1998, Sunset Valley made an agreement with Austin to provide firefighting services.
According to the 2000 census, the city had a population of 365 individuals living in 146 households, with 109 families. The population density was 265.0 people per square mile. There were a total of 154 housing units, with an average density of 111.8 per square mile.
The municipal governing body comprises a mayor and a group of five council members, including a mayor pro tem. As of the year 2022, Marc Bruner served as the mayor, while the council members consisted of Alfonso Carmona as the mayor pro tem, along with Rudi Rosengarten, Wanda Reetz, Justin Litchfield, and Robert Johnson.
The Austin serial bombings that took place from March 2 to March 22, 2018, were investigated by the Sunset Valley Police Department. They identified the suspect, Mark Anthony Conditt, through surveillance footage from a FedEx store in Sunset Valley, where several explosive packages were sent.
Located in the Austin Independent School District, Sunset Valley is home to Sunset Valley Elementary School, Covington Middle School, and Crockett High School.
