Located in the state of Illinois, Naperville is a city situated within the Chicago Metropolitan Area in DuPage and Will counties. Positioned as a western suburb of Chicago, it is situated 28 miles to the west of the city.

According to the 2020 census, the city’s population stood at 149,540 people, ranking it as the fourth most populous city in the state. Edward Hospital, employing a workforce of 4,500 individuals, is Naperville’s biggest employer.

Moser Tower and Millennium Carillon, which is one of the biggest carillons in the world, can be found in Naperville. Additionally, Naperville boasts a vast network of parks and forest preserves, including Centennial Beach. The city is divided into two school districts, namely 203 and 204. Moreover, Naperville is home to various media outlets such as NCTV17. Furthermore, there is a train station in Naperville that is served by both Amtrak and Metra.

During 1996, a flood occurred in Naperville, which had a significant impact on the majority of northeastern Illinois. Within a span of less than 24 hours, Naperville encountered a rainfall of 14 inches, leading to the declaration of DuPage County as a disaster area. The estimated cost of the damages surpassed $30 million.

Numerous areas significantly intersect Naperville’s city limits. Towards the western side, Springbrook Prairie – a nature reserve managed by The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County – stands as a prominent enclave. In the southwest, the Tamarack neighborhood serves as a major unincorporated enclave. Up north, McDowell Grove Forest Preserve and several office complexes surrounding Diehl Road create a substantial enclave within the municipal boundaries.

The climate in Naperville, which falls under the Köppen Dfa classification, is characteristic of the Midwestern humid continental type. It experiences all four seasons, with cold and snowy winters, humid springs, hot summers, and cool falls. The highest temperature ever recorded in Naperville was 105 °F, while the coldest temperature reached -29 °F.

Naperville ranked as the 181st most populous city in the United States as of April 2020.

Dukane Precast and its manufacturing facility for double-wall precast concrete are located in Naperville. In the 1990s, Naperville was among the top ten rapidly expanding communities in the United States. Initially, Naperville was the headquarters for Office Max until it merged with Office Depot in 2013. The former OfficeMax headquarters in Naperville was later sold when the merged company relocated to Boca Raton.

The Naperville Public Library received the highest rating in the country within its spending category, according to Library Journal’s 2022 report.

Established in 1996, the Century Walk Corporation is a non-profit entity that commissions sculptures, murals, and mosaics to be distributed across the city. By February 2021, this organization had successfully installed 51 statues and artwork of a value exceeding $4 million. Among the significant statues are the imposing 9-foot tall depiction of the beloved comic book character Dick Tracy, the Laughing Lincoln that captures a life-sized representation of Abraham Lincoln at 30 years old, and the poignant Dan Shanower Sept. 11 Memorial. The latter memorial incorporates a steel beam originating from the World Trade Center and remnants from the Pentagon.

The Naper Settlement is a historical museum that showcases the time when Naperville was first established. It was created in 1969 by the Naperville Heritage Society and the Naperville Park District with the aim of preserving several of the town’s oldest structures. Among the museum’s attractions are replicated versions of Fort Payne and the Pre-Emption House.

The management and provision of leisure and recreational activities for the people of Naperville and its neighboring areas are handled by the Naperville Park District. This District came into existence through a public vote in 1966, while one of its existing parks, Centennial Beach, has been around since 1932. Currently, in 2021, the Park District is responsible for overseeing more than 2,400 acres (10 km2) of open space, which comprises  over 136 parks, two golf courses, 73 playgrounds, and a network of trails spanning over 70 miles.

Naperville functions with a council-manager system of governance. Its governing body, the City Council, is comprised of the Mayor and eight Council Members who are chosen through elections to serve four-year terms. It is specified that no individual can hold the positions of mayor or council member for more than three consecutive terms.

The central and northern areas of Naperville, as well as parts of Lisle and Bolingbrook, are served by the Naperville Community Unit School District 203. Ellsworth Elementary, built in 1928, is the oldest school still in operation in the district, while the most recent addition is the Ann Reid Early Childhood Center, which opened in 2010.

The Daily Herald is a newspaper that is published every day and provides news to the suburbs of Chicago. It was established by Hosea Paddock in 1872. The Naperville Sun is a newspaper that serves the local community of Naperville, Illinois. It is published on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, and it was founded in 1935. Currently, it is owned by the Chicago Tribune Media Group.

Located approximately 14 miles away from downtown Naperville, the DuPage Airport, also known as DPA, caters to private and charter jets for general aviation purposes. Another airport in close proximity is Clow Airport, which is situated about 1.5 miles from the southeastern border of Naperville in Bolingbrook.

Prominent individuals include Anthony Parker, who played as a shooting guard and small forward for the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers. He was named the 2004 Israeli Basketball Premier League MVP and currently serves as the general manager for the NBA G League’s Lakeland Magic. Candace Parker, a forward, achieved success with the University of Tennessee and the WNBA teams Los Angeles Sparks and Chicago Sky. She is a two-time league MVP and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Jayden Reed is a wide receiver, Sean Payton is the head coach, and Bridgette Caquatto and Mackenzie Caquatto are both gymnasts on the U.S. national team. Nia Dennis also represents the U.S. national team as a gymnast.

Naperville has established partnerships with Nitra in Slovakia starting from November 17, 1993, Pátzcuaro in Mexico starting from November 13, 2010, and Cancun in Mexico starting from May 27, 2021.
