Cedar Hill is a city positioned in Dallas and Ellis counties within Texas, USA. It is situated about 16 miles southwest of downtown Dallas and rests on the eastern edge of Joe Pool Lake and Cedar Hill State Park.

Cedar Hill boasts an impressive collection of historic sites, including five homes recognized by the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places, four structures designated as Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks by the Texas Historical Commission, and two historically significant cemeteries, one of which is thought to be the oldest integrated cemetery in Dallas County, as designated by the Texas Historical Commission.

Raymond Hamilton, an associate of notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde, robbed the First State Bank of Cedar Hill on October 8, 1932. He stole money, locked the employees in the vault, and escaped. Upon learning that some of the cash had been hidden during the initial robbery, Hamilton returned to rob the bank once more. These back-to-back robberies severely impacted the bank, leading to its financial downfall and permanent closure.

Cedar Hill is situated in North Texas at the coordinates 32°35′18″N 96°56′50″W. It is surrounded by various neighboring cities, including Grand Prairie to the southwest, west, and northwest, Dallas to the north, Duncanville to the north and northeast, DeSoto to the northeast and east, Glenn Heights and Ovilla to the southeast, and Midlothian to the south. While the majority of Cedar Hill falls within Dallas County, a small portion extends into Ellis County in the south.

According to the 2020 census in the United States, Cedar Hill has a population of 49,148 people. It is considered a suburb of Dallas and is located in the Best Southwest region along with neighboring cities like DeSoto, Duncanville, and Lancaster.

In 2006, the Uptown Village development was recognized as the Best Real Estate Deal in Retail/Hospitality by Dallas Business Journal. Trademark Property Co. purchased the Uptown Village property in 2015 and initiated major renovations, starting with the addition of a new children’s play area, a promenade section featuring a bocce ball court, a covered stage area, and improved outdoor features to enhance the shopping experience at the lifestyle center. The new name and brand were chosen to capture the planned garden-like aesthetics of the renovated property and to honor the local community.

The majority of the urban area falls within the boundaries of the Cedar Hill Independent School District, while a portion is also covered by the Duncanville Independent School District and the Midlothian Independent School District.

The area is home to several schools, including Cedar Hill High School and Cedar Hill Collegiate High School, which serve the Cedar Hill ISD portion. Duncanville High School serves the Duncanville ISD portion, while Midlothian High School serves the Midlothian ISD portion. Additionally, Life School, a public charter school, operates a K–4 campus in Cedar Hill, and Trinity Christian School – Cedar Hill, affiliated with a local Assemblies of God church, also serves the area.

Residents of Dallas County are assigned to attend Dallas College (previously known as Dallas County Community College or DCCCD), while those living in Ellis County are zoned to attend Navarro College.

Cedar Hill has designated a portion of its land, specifically 20%, for parks and green areas. Among the natural reserves and parks in Cedar Hill are Dogwood Canyon and Cedar Hill State Park, totaling 3,000 acres

Cedar Hill boasts an impressive array of sports facilities, including 21 baseball and softball fields, 18 soccer pitches, 7 basketball courts, 6 tennis courts, 4 football fields, and a 36-hole disc golf course. These facilities make it an ideal location for hosting local, regional, and national sports tournaments.

In the 1950s, Cedar Hill was selected as the site for Hill Tower, a structure that would house television and FM broadcast transmitting towers. The location’s elevation of 880 feet above sea level made it an ideal spot for broadcasting to both Fort Worth and Dallas. Notably, Hill Tower was the first tower to be shared by two television stations, a pioneering feat in the industry.

Cedar Hill now houses numerous local television and radio stations, as well as mobile communications technology service providers, following the establishment of Hill Tower. Currently, it boasts the county’s largest number of radio and television communication antennas, with a total of 14 towers.

The towers are easily distinguishable from a distance of 20 miles on a clear evening, making them a recognizable beacon for travelers. Moreover, pilots utilize the towers as a navigational aid, relying on them as a point of reference during flight.

Cedar Hill is responsible for overseeing and caring for a total of 32 park areas, which consist of 6 community parks, 17 neighborhood parks, 1 special purpose park, 3 nature preserves, and 4 greenbelts.

Cedar Hill has a variety of trails and bikeways totaling more than 45 miles for hiking and biking. Some of the newest ones are Pleasant Run Trail, Lake Ridge Hike and Bike Trail, and Red Oak Creek Trail.

The DORBA Trail, situated within Cedar Hill State Park, holds the distinction of being the longest trail within the park, boasting a shared use hiking and biking path. The trail’s creation is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association and the park’s management team, hence its name. Among mountain biking enthusiasts, the DORBA Trail is widely regarded as one of the premier trails in the state, offering an exciting and challenging experience.

At the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, you’ll find a trail that’s suitable for visitors with disabilities and meets ADA standards.
