Located in Cook County, Illinois, Alsip is a charming village that falls within the larger Chicago metropolitan area.

Alsip is surrounded by several communities, including Worth and Palos Heights to the west, Crestwood to the south, Oak Lawn to the north, and Merrionette Park, Blue Island, and Robbins to the east. The Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago is located to the north and east of Alsip.

The Alsip region contains two cemeteries, Burr Oak and Restvale, known for being primarily African-American burial grounds. These cemeteries are the final resting places of numerous notable figures such as Chicago blues artists like Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, as well as sports personalities like Jimmie Crutchfield. Emmett Till, a significant figure in the Civil Rights Movement due to his tragic murder in Mississippi at the age of 14 in 1955, is interred at Burr Oak. The cemetery gained national attention in 2004 when Till’s murder case was reopened, leading to the exhumation of his body.

In the village, there were 19,063 individuals, 7,796 households, and 4,455 families living there according to the 2020 census.

The majority of Alsip falls within Illinois’ 1st congressional district, while the area north of 115th Street and the city block located northeast of the intersection of 119th Street and Lawndale Avenue are part of the 3rd district.

Several elementary school districts serve the area, including Alsip-Hazelgreen-Oaklawn School District 126, which operates Prairie Junior High School in Alsip. Atwood Heights School District 125 oversees Lawn Manor Elementary School in Oak Lawn, while Meadow Lane Intermediate School in Alsip and Hamlin Junior High School in Alsip fall under the purview of Cook County School District 130.
