Inverness is a residential community located in Cook County, Illinois, in the United States. As census, the population of Inverness was recorded at 7,616 people.

Inverness encompasses a total area of approximately 6.69 square miles, as per the 2021 census gazetteer files. Out of this, a vast majority of 6.53 square miles (comprising around 97.68%) is composed of land, while a smaller portion of 0.16 square miles (making up about 2.32%) is covered by water.

The village is situated within a well-defined perimeter, with Barrington Road marking its western boundary, Roselle Road its eastern edge, Algonquin Road its southern limit, and Dundee Road its northern border.

The village experienced significant growth during the 1970s and 1980s, surpassing earlier projections. Housing sizes increased, and architectural styles diversified. The village also expanded its boundaries by incorporating nearby residential areas in unincorporated Cook County, paving the way for future annexations to the west, which ultimately extended the village’s limits to their current size. In 1981, Williamsburg Village, the sole commercial development in Inverness, was established.

The public schools in the area are overseen by Barrington District 220, School District 15, School District 211. Additionally, Holy Family Catholic Academy, a Catholic school under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, was founded in 2002 in the village. The academy caters to approximately 300 students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade.
