Richton Park, located in Cook County, Illinois, is a village in the southern suburbs of Chicago. In the 2020 census, the population was reported to be 12,775. The village got its name from a place called Richton in Vermont, which was the hometown of one of its early settlers.

The village is situated near Matteson to the north, Park Forest to the east, and University Park to the south.

On a summer evening in June 2008, a powerful tornado swept through Richton Park, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The twister, classified as an EF2, struck at around 6:00pm, causing extensive damage to the Richton Square Apartments and leaving dozens of residents without a place to call home. The storm also severely impacted several businesses along Sauk Trail, before continuing its northeastward path through Park Forest. The tornado eventually dissipated near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Western Avenue.

The main district in Richton Park is Matteson School District 162, which includes Richton Square School, Sauk Elementary School, Illinois Elementary School, Matteson Elementary School, and O.W. Huth Middle School.

Richton Park is home to two public high schools, Rich Township High School and Southland College Preparatory Charter High School, both of which are situated within the village limits.

The Richton Park Public Library District has been providing services to the village since 1972.

The Richton Park station offers Metra commuter rail transportation on the Metra Electric District line. Trains run in a northern direction to Millennium station in Chicago, and in a southern direction to University Park station.

Prominent Locations
Rich City Skate, previously known as Olympic Skate World, is showcased in the HBO film United Skates, which focuses on African American roller skating venues.

Richton Park falls within the boundaries of Illinois’s 2nd congressional district.
