Schaumburg officially became a village on March 7, 1956, though its history reaches back to ancient times when Native American tribes such as the Sauk, Fox, Potawatomi, and Kickapoo inhabited the area. In the mid-1800s, the first settlers arrived from Bonn, Germany, and the eastern United States. A significant number of German immigrants originated from Schaumburg-Lippe, a small principality located in Lower Saxony.

In 1967, a groundbreaking development, International Village, arose at the intersection of Meacham and Algonquin roads, marking Schaumburg’s inaugural foray into diverse residential options beyond single-family homes. The following year, Motorola initiated the construction of its headquarters, strategically situated just across the street, solidifying the area’s transformation into a thriving hub of activity.

In 2000, the local government acquired 45 acres of land adjacent to a separate section of Meacham Road, which was then developed into the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center.

Based on the census data from 2021, Schaumburg covers an area of 19.47 square miles, with 99.39% being land and 0.61% water. The town’s elevation ranges from 750 to 850 feet above sea level, peaking at 850 feet where Schaumburg Road and Webster Lane intersect. Schaumburg is where the West Branch Dupage River originates, draining the central and western parts of the village towards the southwest. Meanwhile, the eastern part is drained by the West Branch of the Salt Creek, which flows east into Busse Lake.
