In the state of Illinois, within Cook County, lies the city of Chicago Heights, with a population of 27,480 as of the 2020 census.
Chicago Heights is located approximately 30 miles to the south of the Chicago Loop.
Chicago Heights School District 170 oversees a total of twelve educational institutions, serving a student body of 3,600. Highland is the district’s preschool, catering to children aged three and four. The district’s elementary schools, including Garfield, Grant, Greenbriar, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Washington-McKinley, and Wilson, provide education to students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Following elementary school, students attend Chicago Heights Middle School for grades six through eight.
After completing 8th grade, students from District 170 attend Bloom High School in Chicago Heights. Bloom Trail High School, which is also located in Chicago Heights, offers athletic programs that are open to students from Bloom High School. Additionally, students from nearby communities such as Steger, South Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Sauk Village, and Glenwood attend high school at Bloom.
Chicago Heights used to be the location of several significant industrial produced freight cars and was led by CEO Richard L. Duchossois for a long time. Additionally, the city was where theland Steel Company was first established.
Ford’s metal stamping plant on Lincoln Highway in Chicago Heights manufactures car body parts that are then transported 15 miles north to the Chicago Assembly plant in the Hegewisch area of Chicago.
Chicago Heights is connected by six Pace bus routes and the Pace Chicago Heights Terminal, providing convenient transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
Well Group Clinic, which was previously known as Suburban Heights Medical Center and is part of St. James, had a location on Dixie Highway. In addition, Chicago Heights was home to two Aunt Martha’s health centers.
St. James Hospital shut down in September 2018, marking the end of its over a century-long operation.
