Located in Dallas County, Texas, Farmers Branch is a city that serves as an inner-ring suburb of Dallas. As part of the larger Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, Farmers Branch is officially known as the City of Farmers Branch.

The early 1850s saw the initial settlement of the community.

The city covers 11.79 square miles (30.54 square kilometers) in total, with just 0.08% (0.09 square miles – 0.24 water.

According to the 2020 US census, the city was home to 35,991 individuals, 16,015 households, and 10,119 families.

Farmers Branch has chosen to join the North Central Texas Council of Governments, a collaborative effort among local governments to streamline services, share resources, and address regional issues through coordinated decision-making. By working together, member cities like Farmers Branch can avoid duplicating efforts and achieve greater efficiency, ultimately benefiting their communities.

Most of Farmers Branch falls within the boundaries of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. In Farmers Branch, you can find Dave Blair Elementary School, Farmers Branch Elementary School, Janie Stark Elementary School, and Nancy H. Strickland Intermediate School for grades 3-5. Students in the 3-5 grades who are in the Strickland zone are also zoned to Neil Ray McLaughlin Elementary School for K-2 in Carrollton. Vivian C. Field Middle School is located in Farmers Branch and caters to most of the CFBISD area. R. L. Turner High School in Carrollton serves a majority of the CFBISD students from Farmers Branch. Residential neighborhoods south of Interstate 635 and west of Interstate 35E are designated to attend La Villita Elementary School, Barbara Bush Middle School, and Ranchview High School in Irving. Additionally, CFBISD’s Early College High School, an alternative high school, is situated on the grounds of Brookhaven College.

The Dallas Independent School District extends its services to a small area in Farmers Branch. In Farmers Branch, there is Chapel Hill Preparatory School, previously named William L. Cabell Elementary School until it was changed in 2018. The school’s current name reflects the Chapel Hill community, as the previous namesake, Mayor of Dallas William Lewis Cabell, had ties to the Confederate States of America. Gooch Elementary serves other residential areas in DISD Farmers Branch. The residential zones in DISD are designated to Marsh Middle School and W.T. White High School.

Mayor Tim O’Hare suggested creating a fresh school district for Farmers Branch by including parts of the existing CFBISD and DISD. In 2011, a majority of voters, approximately 66%, voted against this proposal. At that time, the city did not meet the Texas law criteria of having 8,000 children necessary to establish a new district. KTVT reported that even if the idea had been approved, the city would have faced significant obstacles in progressing with the plan.

Two private schools in Farmers Branch are Mary Immaculate Catholic School, affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas, and German International School of Dallas, which was founded in 2009 and offers classes for preschool and elementary school students.

The Texas Legislature designates Dallas County, including Farmers Branch, as part of the service area of Dallas College, along with all of CFBISD. Brookhaven College, which is part of Dallas College, is situated within the city limits of Farmers Branch.

Farmers Branch also houses Dallas Christian College, a four-year Bible college.

The Japanese School of Dallas, a supplementary educational institution, had its primary office in Farmers Branch until recently. It has since relocated to a new location in Dallas, while still conducting classes at Ted Polk Middle School in Carrollton. The move took place on Monday, July 25, 2016, and the school’s administration is now operating from the new location, while the classroom space remains unchanged.

In 1983, Farmers Branch was among fifteen cities that voted to implement Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) services by imposing a 1 cent sales tax. Currently, the city benefits from DART bus services that connect it to downtown Dallas (via regular and express bus routes), Carrollton, and other crosstown routes. On December 6, 2010, Farmers Branch received light rail transit service, with a station situated near the intersection of Interstates 635 and 35E on the Green Line, which runs from Pleasant Grove in southeast Dallas through downtown Dallas along I-35E and ends in Carrollton at Frankford Road.

The city is bordered by Interstate 35E to the west, the Dallas North Tollway to the east, and Interstate 635 to the south.

Farmers Branch has established sister city connections with Bassetlaw in the United Kingdom and Garbsen in Germany.
