Huntersville, situated in the northern part of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is a sizable suburban town. According to the 2020 census, the population of Huntersville was 61,376, which places it as the 15th most populous municipality in the state of North Carolina. It is positioned within the Charlotte metropolitan area and is approximately 14 miles north of Charlotte.

The town, initially known as Craighead, underwent a name change to pay tribute to Robert Boston Hunter, a nearby cotton farmer and proprietor of land. Its incorporation occurred in 1873.

Huntersville is situated 14 miles above Uptown Charlotte.

Huntersville is where Joe Gibbs Racing is headquartered. The team boasts an impressive record, having secured five NASCAR Cup Series drivers championships thanks to the efforts of Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, and Kyle Busch. Additionally, they have achieved victory in more than 190 Cup races.

The town is popularly referred to as a lake community due to its close proximity to Lake Norman, a sizable artificial lake constructed by Duke Power to supply the nuclear power plant. Additionally, Mountain Island Lake, a smaller artificial lake situated along the southwest border of Huntersville, serves as Charlotte’s water source. These lakes draw in boaters and water-skiers from neighboring states.

The town operates under the leadership of a Mayor and a Board of Commissioners who are elected through non-partisan elections. These elections occur every two years, with separate elections for the Mayor and Commissioners. There are no primary elections for either position. When voting, citizens can choose up to six Commissioner candidates, and the six candidates with the most votes will be elected.

Public school students in Huntersville who are of school age are enrolled in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system.

Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson are three towns situated in the northern part of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Collectively, these towns form the region referred to as “North Meck.” This area benefits from express bus services and an interstate highway that has HOV lanes, allowing convenient access to the downtown business districts of Charlotte, located just five miles south of Huntersville.
