Located in the heart of Caldwell County, Texas, United States, Lockhart proudly serves as both a city and the county’s administrative hub.

On a fateful summer day, a hot air balloon accident occurred, claiming the lives of 16 individuals. The balloon came into contact with a power line, igniting a fire that proved fatal. The tragic incident occurred near the small community of Maxwell on July 30, 2016.

Lockhart can be found at the coordinates 29°52′55″N 97°40′34″W (29.881870, -97.676040). Positioned close to central Texas, Lockhart is situated 30 miles (48 km) to the south of downtown Austin along U.S. Highway 183. It is also 70 miles (110 km) northeast of San Antonio and 156 miles (251 km) west of Houston.

The city boasts a total area of 15.6 square miles (40.4 km2), with a mere 0.04 sq mi (0.1 km2) or 0.14% of it covered in water, as reported by the United States Census Bureau.

The climate is marked by steady warmth and consistent rainfall, with the Köppen climate classification identifying it as a humid subtropical climate, specifically a Cfa type.

According to the 2020 US census, the city had a population of 14,379 individuals living in 4,503 households, which included 2,944 families.

Lockhart’s city council consists of seven members. The mayor and two council members are elected citywide, while the other four council members are elected from specific districts within the city.

Lockhart is within the Lockhart Independent School District and is where Lockhart High School Lions are based.
