Matteson, a village in Cook County, Illinois, had a population of 19,073 according to the 2020 census. Located in the Southland area of Chicago, Matteson is a suburb of the city.

When Matteson officially became a village in 1889, its population was just shy of 500 residents.

Matteson is situated near several other communities, including Park Forest and Olympia Fields to the east, Country Club Hills and Tinley Park to the north, Frankfort to the west, and Richton Park to the south.

In the vicinity, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration oversees its Midwestern Region Service Center, while Valspar runs a paint production facility in Matteson.

The Matteson station, established in 1863, and the 211th Street station cater to the residents of Matteson. Metra commuter trains on the Metra Electric District run in a northbound direction to Millennium station and southbound to University Park station. Pace operates bus service on Route 357 that links Matteson with various locations in the Southland region.

The main east-west road in the village is US 30, also known as Lincoln Highway. I-57 serves as the primary north-south route. IL 50, or Cicero Avenue, acts as the village’s secondary north-south road. Positioned on the western edge of the village is IL 43, known as Harlem Avenue.

Matteson is served by three distinct school districts. Matteson School District 159 and Matteson School District 162 cater to students in grades PK-8, with each district covering separate areas of the village. Rich Township High School District 227 encompasses all of Matteson and provides education for high school students.

Matteson is served by Rich Township High School, the sole public high school under the jurisdiction of the high school district. Prior to this, Matteson was split between the attendance areas of Rich Central High School and Rich South High School.

Villagers are also eligible to enroll at Southland College Preparatory Charter High School.

The community is served by the Matteson Area Public Library District, which has been operational since 1993. In 2015, an expansion project was completed, adding 7,500 square feet (700 m2) to the existing library, thus bringing the total area to 30,300 square feet (2,810 m2).

Matteson, Illinois, has been home to a variety of notable individuals throughout the years. Jon Asamoah, a former NFL player, played for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2014-2015 season. The rapper Dreezy has lived in Matteson on and off. Kendall Gill, a former professional basketball player, grew up in the town. Robin Kelly, the Congresswoman representing Illinois’ 2nd congressional district, resides in Matteson. Additionally, the town has been home to the rapper Sir Michael Rocks, professional basketball player Tyler Ulis, and rapper Gerald Walker, who grew up in Matteson.
