Located in the southeastern part of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States, Matthews is a Charlotte suburb.
During the start of the 19th century, the emerging community that eventually became known as Matthews was informally called Stumptown due to the large number of tree stumps left behind when clearing land for cotton farms. At a later time, the name of the community was changed to Fullwood in honor of John Miles Fullwood, who was appointed as the local postmaster. With the introduction of a sawmill and the growth of the cotton and timber industry, Fullwood gradually transformed into a town. Before the arrival of the first train on December 15, 1874, Fullwood served as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Charlotte and Monroe.
