Mount Prospect is a community located in Cook County, Illinois, situated about 20 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and around 4 miles north of O’Hare International Airport. According to the 2020 census, the village was home to 56,852 residents.

Based on the gazetteer files from the 2021 census, the area of Mount Prospect is 10.76 square miles (27.87 km2), with 10.72 square miles (27.76 km2) (equivalent to 99.65%) being land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (which is 0.35%) being water.

Mount Prospect’s climate, as classified by Köppen, falls under the category of Humid continental climate (Dfa) with a warm summer type. The village endures warm to hot and humid summers, followed by frigid and snowy winters. Its location places it within U.S.D.A Hardiness zone 5b, near the boundary of zone 6a.

The old headquarters of United Airlines in Elk Grove Township became part of Mount Prospect in the 2010s through annexation.

As per the 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report of the Village, the main employers in the city are listed below along with the number of employees they have. CVS Caremark leads the list with 1,445 employees, followed by Robert Bosch Tool Corporation with 650 employees and Cummins-Allison Corporation with 391 employees. Other significant employers include the Village of Mount Prospect, Rauland-Borg, Mount Prospect School District 57, Carson Pirie Scott, Jewel-Osco Food Stores, Rainbow Hospice & Palliative Care, and Prospect High School.

The village is divided into multiple districts for its educational services. Central Mount Prospect is under the jurisdiction of Mount Prospect School District 57, while North Mount Prospect falls under River Trails School District 26. South Mount Prospect is within Elk Grove Community Consolidated School District 59, with a small section in the north served by Buffalo Grove-Wheeling Community Consolidated District 21. Arlington Heights School District 25 serves a portion of the north central area, and Prospect Heights School District 23 covers a small part of northwest Mount Prospect.

The town is served by several park districts, including Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Prospect Heights, and River Trails, offering parks and recreational facilities.

In Mount Prospect, transportation options are readily available. The village is served by the Metra commuter rail service, which runs along the Union Pacific Northwest Line and offers trains that travel southeast to Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center and northwest to either Harvard or McHenry stations. Additionally, Pace buses provide convenient service throughout the village.

In the film The Blues Brothers from 1980, the vehicle the main characters used is said to have been purchased at an auction from the Mount Prospect Police Department. A Mount Prospect Police car is featured in an episode of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” in season 11, paying tribute to The Blues Brothers.
