Tinley Park, previously known as Bremen, is a thriving village in Cook County, Illinois, with a minor portion extending into Will County. Located just outside of Chicago, Tinley Park has experienced rapid growth and has become a popular suburb for families. According to the 2020 census, the village is home to 55,971 residents, solidifying its position as one of the most rapidly developing suburbs southwest of the city. In 2009, BusinessWeek recognized Tinley Park as the ideal place in the country to raise a family, a testament to its family-friendly atmosphere and strong community.
In the early 19th century, the region now known as Tinley Park was first inhabited by migrants from the East Coast. The area saw a surge in German immigrants by the 1840s, who would eventually establish the village in 1853.
The arrival of the railroad brought about a growth in industry and trade. In 1905, the Diamond Spiral Washing Machine Company opened its inaugural factory in Tinley Park. Local entrepreneurs set up an electric power company in 1909. A soda bottling plant was active in Tinley Park until the 1950s. Engineer John Rauhoff created and produced a water-resistant cement additive named Ironite, which was subsequently utilized in building the Hoover Dam.
On February 2, 2008, a devastating mass shooting took place at the Lane Bryant store located in the Brookside Marketplace on the Will County side of the village. The tragic event led to the closure of the store.
Tinley Park encompasses a total area of 16.13 square miles, as per the 2021 census gazetteer files. Of this, an overwhelming 99.93% constitutes land, spanning 16.12 square miles, while a mere 0.07% is water, covering 0.01 square miles.
The area is surrounded by Oak Forest in the northeast, Orland Park in the northwest, Orland Hills and Mokena in the west, Country Club Hills in the east. It is also near Matteson in the southeast, Frankfort in the southwest, and Frankfort Square in the south.
Tinley Park is split between two separate congressional districts the village, encompassing Bremen Township and Rich Township in addition to the portion in Will County, within Illinois’s 1st congressional district. On the other hand, the section in Orland Township located south of 167th Street, along with a significant portion southwest of 163rd Street and Ozark Avenue, is situated in the 3rd district.
Tinley Park is served by four public school districts, providing a range of educational opportunities for local students. These districts include Kirby School District 140, which consists of five elementary schools and two middle schools, Prairie View Middle School and Virgil I. Grissom Middle School; Community Consolidated School District 146, with four elementary schools and Central Middle School; Summit Hill School District 161, featuring five elementary schools and Summit Hill Junior High School; and School District 159, with four elementary schools and Colin Powell Middle School.
In addition, the town has three private elementary schools for children in Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade: St. George School, a Catholic institution; Trinity Lutheran School, associated with the LCMS; and Southwest Chicago Christian School located in Tinley Park.
Victor J. Andrew High School is situated in Tinley Park and falls under the Consolidated High School District 230, while Tinley Park High School is under the Bremen Community High School District 228. Some students from Tinley Park attend Lincoln-Way East High School, while a few in the southwest area of the village go to Rich Central High School.
The majority of Tinley Park residents live in the Moraine Valley Community College district, while others are in the South Suburban College district. A small fraction of Tinley Park falls within the boundaries of Joliet Junior College.
Tinley Park is accessible via Metra trains on the Rock Island District line, with two stations located within the village: Oak Park Avenue and 80th Avenue.
Tinley Park is connected to various destinations in the Southland through bus service provided by Pace on routes 356, 364, and 386.
I-80 runs through the village from east to west.
