Located in Cook County, Illinois, Westchester is a village with a population of 16,892 as of the 2020 census. It is situated as a western suburb of Chicago.

In the mid-19th century, German agriculturalists settled in the region currently known as Westchester.

The 2010 census reports that Westchester has a total area of 3.69 square miles (9.56 km2), comprising entirely of land. Its western border is shared with Du Page County.

The village of Westchester offers limited transportation options to its residents. Cermak Road and Roosevelt Road are two primary streets that run through the area, providing some convenience for those with vehicles. Additionally, Pace Bus Service operates three routes (301, 317, and 330) that serve the community, with one route (317) following the former CTA Blue Line extension before its removal. Furthermore, Pace is planning to introduce a Pulse rapid transit route along the Cermak corridor, which is currently served by route 322. The new service is expected to begin in 2029.

Westchester is split into three congressional districts. The regions situated south of Cermak Road or west of Haase and Burns avenues fall within Illinois’s 3rd congressional district. The areas east of Mannheim Road and east of Mayfair Avenue, between Canterbury Street and Dorchester Avenue, are part of the 7th district. The remaining area, primarily comprising Oak Ridge and Glen Oak cemeteries, lies within the state’s 4th district.

Westchester is home to the distinguished Westbrook Corporate Center, situated at the intersection of Wolf Road and Cermak Road. This impressive complex has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the 2000/2001 BOMA- International Office Building of the Year Award, 2000/2001 BOMA- North Central Region Office Building of the Year Award, and 1998/1999, 1999/2000, 2000/2001 BOMA- Suburban Chicago Office Building of the Year Award.

The city’s public education system is served by Westchester School District 92.5, which covers most of the area. The district operates four schools, catering to students of different age groups: Westchester Primary School (for preschoolers to 2nd graders), Westchester Intermediate School (3rd to 5th graders), Westchester Middle School (6th to 8th graders), and Britten School (for children with special needs).

Hillside School District 93, which runs a single K-8 school in Hillside and also serves a part of Westchester.

The high schools in Proviso Township district cater to high school students living in the area. Students who live within the designated zones go to Proviso West High School located in Hillside. Residents of Westchester have the option to submit an application to attend Proviso Math & Science Academy, which is situated in Forest Park.

In the village, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago has a private Catholic school called Divine Providence School, which offers classes from preschool to 8th grade.

Westchester Park District in the Village of Westchester offers a variety of recreational facilities and activities for residents and visitors alike. In close proximity to the village, there are five golf courses, such as The Chicago Highlands Club and Fresh Meadow Golf Club, among others. Furthermore, Westchester features attractions like Eden Lanes Bowling Alley, Focus Time Escape Rooms, Wolf Road Prairie, Westchester Woods Sledding Hill, youth sports organizations, and numerous forest preserves.

The John J. Sinde Community Swimming Pool is open to the public and serves as Westchester’s go-to destination for aquatic recreation.
Alternatively, the Chicago Highlands Club features an outdoor seasonal pool, but access is restricted to members and their guests only.

Prominent individuals from Westchester include Philip Caputo, a well-known author and journalist famous for “A Rumor of War,” Kathryn Hahn, an actress known for her role in “Crossing Jordan,” and Gene Pingatore, a respected basketball coach at St. Joseph High School. Other notable figures associated with the area include mafia member Marco D’Amico, state legislator Jim Durkin representing Illinois’ 82nd District, and rapper Saba. Additionally, Chicago Outfit members Mario Anthony DeStefano and Michael Sarno have ties to Westchester, while NFL players Julian Love and Cameron Meredith, as well as Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court Daniel P. Ward and former Chicago Bears player Bill Wightkin, have also lived in the area.
